UI STUDENTS CLASH WITH POLICE -MAIN GATE TURNS BATTLE GROUND -POLICE BREAKS INTO SHOPS -INNOCENT CITIZENS ARRESTED
Violence reared its ugly in the nation's premier university, University of Ibadan as Students of the University fired the first salvo in what they described as 'war against FG's proposed privatization of university hostels'.
The peaceful protest which started in the early hours of the day turned violent when the anti-riot police who have been laying siege on the Varsity gate for about four days moved to disperse the protesters who were bound to Media houses in Ibadan metropolis to register their displeasure against the proposed privatization of varsity hostels by General Obasanjo.
Tear gas canisters and gunshots rent the air as student protesters traded stones, sticks and broken bottles with the police. The clash assumed a new dimension when policemen rained tear gas canisters on Agbowo Shopping Complex direct opposite the Varsity gate and then broke into shops to loot and indiscriminately arrested shop owners and innocent citizens who ran into the scene.
In a special release issued by the Students Union, the Students registered their displeasure against privatization of university hostels and passionately appealed to intending investors to desist from the federal government's privatization bid for 'it shall be unreservedly thwarted by Nigerian Students, regardless of whose ox is gored'
It would be recalled that the protest against privatization of university hostels started consequent upon the unveiling of Federal government's privatization agenda on the 14th October 2004 by the Minister for Education. (ref: Guardian newspaper October 15, 2004)

"In 2005, may you manage your enemies better than Audu Ogbeh". "May our lives not be as meaningless as Obasanjo's speeches and reforms. But may our happiness increase like fuel prices in Nigeria. I hope this is a "good wish".Have a wonderful day/Laugh
